Three Low-Prep Valentine's Day Writing Activity Ideas for Middle School ELA Teachers

Looking for last minute, low-prep Valentine's Day activity ideas for middle school ELA, Teacher Bestie? I've got you!

Try these!

1. Use whatever current vocabulary you're teaching to have students write a love letter (or a story, or a poem-- see #2). It doesn't have to be an "EWWWW!" one-- it could be to their favorite book or movie character, a friend or family member, or even a pet or favorite food! These could get really fun and creative.

2. POETRY. Ask students to write a poem about ANYTHING. Could be a free write. Could be specific to your current novel/literature study. Tie it in, or don't-- it's still going to meet your writing standards. Don't have time to teach them specific poetry types? Haikus and acrostics are my go-to for easy poetry writing lessons.

If you have extra time to plan, check out my Poetry Book Project resource. It teaches students how to write 10 different types of poems: elegy, ballad, cinquain, diamante, ode, couplets, concrete, free verse/rap, limerick, and "I Am".

3. Use famous love quotes from literature as argumentative writing prompts. I collected four examples to get your started (see images below). There are LOTS more out there. Get students thinking about famous love stories in literature. Maybe even have them do some research on their own about their favorites. Then, ask them to defend their favorite couple! #relationshipgoals
